Giving life meaning

Look at the narcoleptic cat, and all will be revealed.

Taxi ride

My niece is putting on a children’s play with her Edgewood College class called “Nowhere for Polar Bear” about the effects of global warming. I snuck my little camera into the “family night” performance and took this and a couple other video clips. Now that Flickr allows posting short (less than 90 seconds) videos, I thought I would try posting these. Worked well, I think.

Why I love John Cole of Balloon Juice

“Rev. Wright was a Marine and then spent his entire life trying to make things better for people. He can say whatever the fuck he wants. And he sure as hell didn’t send the economy into the shitter while vilifying half the country and sending 4,000 people to their deaths while presiding over a torture regime. Some perspective, please.”

Amen, brother.

Baby Mama

I went into the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler movie “Baby Mama” expecting to be mildly entertained. I love both those women, and the previews were funny. I’m a master of low expectations these days. But the movie was definitely funnier and sweeter than I expected. (Cameos by Steve Martin, Holland Taylor, Sigourney Weaver and Maura Tierney didn’t hurt either.) I was a little worried at first, because some of the gags from the previews happen early on, and I had that sinking feeling you get when you think that they put all the funny stuff in the preview and there won’t be anything left for the actual movie. But as it unfolded I was definitely carried along, and pleasantly surprised by the genuinely sweet moments.

It’s predictable, by and large, but you don’t go to see a movie like this for the innovation. You go to laugh, and forget your troubles for a while with a good story that doesn’t insult your intelligence, and that’s what this movie delivers. Those two make a great team, and I would pretty much buy a ticket for anything in the future they decide on.

Pick a side

Q: How did life begin on Earth?

SCIENTISTS: We don’t know. But we’re looking into it.

CREATIONISTS: God did it.

Pick a side, people. It’s not difficult.

Fun fact: The Scopes Trial was more than 80 years ago.

Project 365 update

After weeks of procrastination, I’ve caught up with uploading images to my Project 365 set on Flickr. Let me know what you think.

Hillary, please go away

My thoughts on the primary, expressed by Balloon Juice commenter Raenelle:

“If Hillary had ever fought this hard for something that benefited the American people–like say, opposing the fucking Iraq War, or opposing giving creepy W. more power of any kind ever–then I wouldn’t be so alarmed at the prospect of having her around for a couple of more months. But she never did, and I have come to really despise her for her calculation and tired centrism and insincere personal moments . . . She can fight; she just doesn’t do it unless it benefits her directly and personally. Fuck her. Though, if the unlikely happens and she steals the nomination, I’ll vote for her. It just makes me nauseous to think about that.”

Here’s some humor:

Bueller?

Yesterday, my old site, Utopia, which I haven’t updated in more than a year, got three times as many hits as the site you are reading now.

No, I’m not bitter. Well, maybe a little. :-)

I’m actually fairly proud of a lot of writing I did on Utopia, as angry as it was. (These days, if you’re not angry with the state of the world, you’re not paying attention.) I flirt sometimes with the idea of making posts from it, and/or from my original site, words mean things, into a PDF “book.” Could be a fun project.

The watery lens of pain

I think the government has been testing this new weapon on me.

What’s the point of Twitter?

I’ve noticed more and more people using Twitter. Can anyone tell me why they use it? Seems kind of like calling up your friend and saying, “I’m eating a sandwich. Look at it! LOOK AT IT!” But then again, maybe I’m just an old codger who came of age with the TRS-80 and doesn’t understand all this new high-falutin’ technology.

To me, though, it seems like one of those classic solutions in search of a problem, like anti-static spray.

Let me know where I’m going wrong here.
