You know, I have never heard of this until you linked to it. Maybe I am just that behind in the times.

But to the why question, <a href="http://twitter.com/help/why" rel="nofollow">well I point you to their site</a>.

Apparently your mom wants to know when you are eating soup, or when you are partying, so she can join you. Frankly I don't want my mom to know what I am doing at any one point, and I am sure she really doesn't want to know either, if she really thought about it. And come to think of it, isn't this why I have a computer? If someone want to know if I am enjoying a tasty piece of pie, they can just email me and ask. if I am available right then and there, I will answer them. Or they can call me, and I can ignore them.

I laughed at it for a little while, and then I tried it out. It's a lot more satisfying than you might expect--now that blogging is a bit passe (I find that I seldom want to read my friends' thoughts at length), it's a good way to share brief, pithy observations and stay informed about what your friends are doing.

The overall effect is a bit like being at a dinner table and hearing several different conversations at once, although in this case most comments aren't addressed to anyone in particular or continuously on the same topic.
